Architectural Styles of California House Plans

While practically every architectural style can be found across California, the state has defined and embraced several styles as its own.

Craftsman. Homes in California are built in the Craftsman-style of architecture because it combines cozy simplicity with exquisite attention to detail. These homes frequently include:

• Exposed rafters on the inside

These houses often feature offset porches, simple front lawns, and a single story that spreads out the rooms to maximize space.

Contemporary. In addition to the many classic and historical designs, California also includes many contemporary homes. These houses can vary noticeably in appearance, though many focus on simple exteriors incorporating a wide range of building materials. Available in both one- and two-story layouts, these homes bring modern design elements to the forefront by enhancing the flow between rooms and incorporating numerous windows.

Ranch. California redefined the ranch plan as we know it in the 1950s and 60s, to the point that it became known as the "California Ranch." Rectangular and long with a low-pitched roof, it typically had three bedrooms, an attached garage, and blended into its surroundings, including spaces for outdoor living.

Mid-Century Modern. Inspired by the California Ranch, the Mid-Century Modern house design takes a bold approach, using dramatic angles and deep overhangs to create vaulted spaces inside. The design enjoys a light-filled interior, thanks to large windows and an open floor plan.
