About Mid-Century Modern Design

In 20th-century post-war America, a housing boom included mass-produced, traditional houses. At this time, Mid-century Modern style was thought to be innovative and left to those with that frame of mind. Joseph Eichler, a progressive real estate developer inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, sought to change that by making the homes available to the broader public.

This architectural style was vastly different from other homes built during the 1950s. The style was founded on the modernist design, meaning that it typically had low-sloping or flat rooflines, geometric lines, and concrete floors (with radiant heating). Newer designs pull inspiration from contemporary homes and include updated amenities, while the exterior consists of features consistent with the original style.

Other features you’ll commonly find in Mid-century Modern house plans:

  • Open spaces in the living areas

  • Small steps that go up or down to show room separation

  • Main floor primary suite

  • Sliding doors for bedrooms and closets

  • Ensuite bathrooms

  • Design aspects that connect the outdoor spaces with the indoors

The modern version of this architecture continues to be a popular choice because it pairs a sleek style with contemporary needs. If the style fits your taste, browse our collection of plans and contact our experienced customer support team with any questions!
