Acadian house plans are characterized by their rustic and French country style. This style is widespread throughout the South and Gulf Coast region, partly due to the strong French and Cajun influences in architecture and culture. These homes are most commonly single-story buildings, though some models feature a half-story with tall, sloping rooflines. High-pitched hip roofs are among the signature features of Acadian style homes. These features add to the rural charm of the houses while also making it easy to shed rain, snow, or debris like leaves and small branches. Brick exterior, front porches, and wraparound porches are typical of this architectural design.

Features of Acadian Home Design

Here are a few other characteristics you’ll commonly find with this style of house:

  • Steeply pitched hip roofs with dormers — this space is used for attics or extra bedrooms.
  • Grand entryways and impressively high ceilings in the living and dining room areas — hence the 1½ story layouts.
  • More traditional and segmented floor plan — the bedrooms are shifted to the sides of the home and divided by a central hallway. The primary suite is often split from the others.
  • The kitchen is located at the rear of the house — it typically does not connect to the dining room, great room, or other areas.
  • Covered porches in the front and back are similar to what you’d find with Southern-style homes.
  • Windows with shutters and a stonework facade — as these homes were frequently built in locales where storms were a regular occurrence, these features can be functional and ornamental.

Whether you live in Louisiana or elsewhere, add a bit of French countryside flair to your dream home with our Acadian style house plans.
