Cape Cod home plans are characterized by their clean lines and straightforward appearance, which stems from the practical needs of the original New England settlers.

The original Cape Cod homes were cottages built for small families to withstand the harsh climate of the region. As such, the homes offer few exterior adornments, focusing on simple and clean appearances with small porches and little to no roof overhang. These plans also reflect a more traditional layout, with a central hallway running through the middle of the home connecting the living areas and the bedrooms. Some contemporary Cape Cod home plans may include larger kitchens or open living areas in the floor plan, depending on the needs and tastes of the owners.

Features of Cape Cod Home Plans

One of the most notable features of these home plans is the prominent roof line, which extends across the house. Over time, the houses grew from single-room buildings to multi-room dwellings for growing families. As the homes grew, the construction process changed to retain as much of the original characteristics of the early styles.

Today’s Cape Cod house plans typically follow the one-and-a-half floor design, which means that additional living spaces exist on the upper floor, built right under the roof itself. This style of plan usually include dormers that extend out of the roof, indicating that there are one or more rooms on the upper area. These rooms are built around the slanting of the roof, and often only exist in the front of the home.

We offer many plans with a Cape Cod influence here at The Plan Collection. Check them out below.
