House plans with a big garage — including space for three, four, or even five cars — are more popular. Overlooked by many homeowners, oversized garages offer significant benefits, including protecting your vehicles, storing clutter, and adding resale value to your home.

It is not uncommon for many families to find a car parked outside while a garage bay is full of lawn and garden equipment, bikes, and other recreational toys. Yet leaving a $30,000+ car outside exposed to bad weather may not be the best choice either. A 3-car garage house plan allows homeowners to keep two cars inside and have a bay for all the other stuff.

The Popularity of Big Garage House Plans

Perhaps you like tinkering with cars? Gardening? An oversized garage with a workshop or extra storage space might be just what you need. Many find the extra space a haven for these types of activities. And, of course, some are avid auto collectors who find a 5+ car garage to be more up their alley!

Some even use a garage plan to add extra living space to their home by adding a garage apartment. 

While 2-car garages have been common for years, homes built with three or more car garages have doubled in the past 25 years, according to U.S. Census data. This trend does vary somewhat by region. 

• It is more common in the Midwest and Rocky Mountain region to find homes with 3-or-more car bays. This is primarily due to winter weather. Who wants to shovel snow or scrape ice off of a car? 

• The trend toward home plans with large garages is also strong in Texas, given the popularity of SUVs, pick-up trucks, and recreational toys. 

• The trend is least common in the Northeast, where small lot sizes effectively create limitations on the size.
