Bungalow homes are generally narrow yet deep homes, often with a detached garage. They are single story homes or one-and-a-half stories. They usually have a small porch with columns set in large brick bases. A gabled roof with steep pitches is common to this style.

This style home is most commonly found in older neighborhoods of America. They became very popular from the 1910s to the 1930s but remain a popular choice to build or buy for many people today. With updated features that fit a more modern lifestyle, these homes appeal to a wide range of buyers due to the homey, cozy feel. With many options available from simple to extravagant, bungalow floor plans make great family homes for new or growing families.

Features of the Bungalow House Design

Though the style is older, new bungalow house plans have adapted to modern needs while keeping many of the same exterior architectural elements that are crucial to this style. Here are some of the common features you’ll find in these homes today:

  • Layout that’s smaller in width but longer in length. Though people often think of these homes as being small, there are large options available with ample sq. ft.
  • Attached outdoor living spaces including a covered front porch with stairs and columns, and oftentimes a rear porch as well. The porches are sometimes enclosed with screens to keep the bugs away.
  • Gable roof design with fairly steep pitches. There are frequently dormers included in this style as well.
  • Detached garage or no garage are common. However, there are still plenty of options with an attached garage.
  • Craftsman style influences within the architecture. Many of these homes could be considered craftsman bungalows.
  • Modern updates that fit today’s lifestyle. You’ll find homes with open floor plans, walk-in closets, split bedrooms and more to accommodate current home trends.

Bungalow style house plans are just as great for vacation homes as they are for permanent residences. No matter your situation, we’re bound to have a design that you’ll love. Contact us with any questions on any of the plans!
