House Plan Description
The Moon Dance plan was inspired by our popular Sun Dance series. For passive solar gain, it also has the front of the house designed to face south, but is simpler in its framing and can easily be constructed with SIPs (structural insulated panels) walls and roof, and an ICF (insulated concrete form) foundation.
An all brick home with accents of cement board siding make the Moon Dance low-maintenance. A green metal roof with any color brick adds a touch of classic design while still being unique. Add some custom windows with panes of glass and the look would become even more craftsman.
The Moon Dance is home to grow old in as the primary rooms are on the first floor and the interior doors are 3' which allow wheelchairs and walkers to fit. The laundry is conveniently located next to the master close and the computer nook is in the center of the home.
The entire upstairs is vaulted and the upstairs study nook on the north overlooks the large great room below while the west porches, balconies, and deck overlook the sunsets to the west. The rest of the first floor has 9' ceilings. Although the windows on the north, east, and west have been minimized for energy performance, there are just enough to allow for views in all directions.
A large stone rumford fireplace has been designed for the west wall, but for land with great views to the west, windows could be added and the west porch extended to shade from the hot afternoon summer sun. The dining area could also be closed off and the area converted into a home office or extra bedroom as the breakfast area is large enough to place a table for 6.
To add some thermal mass to the home, a few interior brick (or stone) walls have been added. This allows you to install floors such as wood in the bedrooms. The rest of the first floor is designed to have ceramic tile floors which add some thermal mass.
The basement has a large entertainment and exercise area that opens to a patio on the west. The northwest corner can be another bedroom or office. If you chose to put the extra bedrooms in the walkout daylight basement and did not want the second floor, the main level could be constructed with simple trusses and the roof slope lowered. Like many of our home plans, the Moon Dance also has flexibility and our custom change service can customize the plans for you.
The optional detached garage or carport could also be attached on the north side of the home without affecting the solar gain. For those who like a large master tub or whirlpool, one could easily be added to the south end of the master bath.
Custom energy recommendations and specifications come with this plan.
