Wow! This Is Expensive: Making Sure to Budget Before Starting to Build

I am building a house. I have been married seven years. I have twin daughters and another little girl that is 7 months old. Three kids total. My sister-in-law studied family something to do with marrage in college and she tells us that there are several factors that leads to divorce - building a house, the seventh year of marrage and a dealing with all that comes when you have a brand new baby. Oh and I am trying to sell a car and my house too. So I am bona fide nuts. No doubt about it. I and Callie, my wife, spent some time with Jaren and Jake the other day figuring out what will go into the new house. All I can say is I respect anyone that can build homes for a living. It is an expensive risky deal and you get all the complainers like me who think adding things like blinds, different paint colors, or a new pool should be free. Anyway we are in there looking at the plan and we are asking things like “if we add three feet here how much will that cost?” “Ten thousand, “ says Jaren. “Hmm, that is a lot of money,” I say. “How much for a loft over the garage?” Jaren tells me, “that will be around fifteen thousand.” “Ouch,” I say while what I am really thinking is “Holy !#&* that is a lot of money.” My poor wife hates this. I am cheap. I know. I grew up in the distant lands of Idaho working on a farm and thinking, “wow, if I work hard all summer I can make 300 bucks.” I think once you have moved irigation pipe across a field of potatoes you somehow start to directly associate money with labor. I made ten cents per each pipe that I moved. Ten thousand dollars would be one hundred thousand pipes and an really sore back. At any rate we are proceeding with the house or at least with the planning stages. Here is a link to the plan of the house we are building

As for the seven years, new baby, twin daughters, new house, car for sell (2003 Honda Pilot EX if you are interested), house for sell, and everything else I think I will be just fine. Callie is great and the girls are cute. The next few months should be very interesting
