Luxury vs. Simplicity

Much of the indecision that comes while shopping for house plans is rooted in the fact that we can’t always separate our needs from our wants.  We have a more difficult time deciding which wants are needed more than other wants.  Sound confusing?  It can be.  Don’t worry.  It’s all part of the Dream Home Adventure.  I’ll give you a big hint:  We all want luxury.  We all need simplicity.

It’s a game called Tug-a-War.  In this episode, we have our large, heavy weight luxury homes vs. our simpler, well built, smart homes.  Smart homes?  You got it.  And I’m not talking about some computerized dwelling either.  A luxury home has everything, while a smart home is designed around comfort, practicality, the most important spaces, and are often energy efficient.  I suggest that we will not be the happiest with everything, because we will always want more.  Smart homes may not have everything, but they will have the best things.

Simplicity is the idea embraced in a smart home.  I had a personal experience with this at a recent Parade of Homes event.  We visited one home that everyone had talked about.  It had a Pirates of the Caribbean style play room underneath the garage.  It was complete with a cave that looked like a scull, a climbing wall, and a trampoline level with the floor.  The large theater one room over had a pirate style bar at the rear.  Everyone had something to say about how unique and ‘cool’ it was.  I noticed that it was one of the few that hadn’t sold yet.  I also noticed that the main floor was broken apart into several small formal rooms and bedrooms.  The only room fit for a crowd was the play room.  Is there someone out there looking for a large play room? Yes.  However, I think they are probably concerned about the other rooms as well.

Keep it simple.  Focus on the most important rooms.  Do you entertain guests?  Think kitchen, great room, and guest suite.  Do you like solitude?  Think master suite.  Do you have 10 children?  Think bedrooms and bonus room or play room.  Don’t forget energy efficiency.  Can you afford to pay the mortgage on a mansion and pay the heating and cooling bill at the same time?  Associate your needs and your wants.  If they don’t fit together, then it probably isn’t that important in the long run.  Your smart home won’t necessarily have everything you want, but it can have the best things.  You’d be surprised at how luxurious your simply smart home will be.
