If you are planning on building a new home, then you may want to know that trends in the United States are indicating people are actually building “forever homes” with the thought of having plenty of room for family throughout the life stages. It is being dubbed “Aging in Place” and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) offers a certification program called *CAPS on how to do it.

Due to the current U.S. Baby Boomer population – 1946 through 1964 – people are either building new homes in retirement or remodeling their homes to fit new lifestyle needs. AARP research actually says that most older home owners prefer to age-in-place. This means people want to stay in their homes independently and be safe and comfortable, regardless of their abilities or age.

The NAHB suggests that there are three steps:

1.  Get familiar with the concept of aging in place.

2.  Build or remodel a home that is accessible to anyone regardless of physical ability or age.

3.  Demand and expect sustainable excellence in all building materials.

Thanks to websites like The Plan Collection (www.theplancollection.com) which features almost every type of house plan available, you can search for ideas and plans like these one story house plans, which offer the perfect solution for empty nesters needing to live on one single level. Some of the plans feature our designs with split master bedroom suites for added privacy.

These house plans generally have open kitchen dining and family room areas, not restricted by walls or or doors. There are wider hallways that are open to the foyer of the home.

In this small 1,422 sq. ft. single story house plan # 120-1544 there are three bedrooms and two full bathes.

Note how in the actual house plan (right) there is open space surrounding the great room, and kitchen areas. Plus there is very easy access to all three bedrooms.
